Walk In Christ
Dear friend in Christ,
Come and sit with me a while. Pour yourself some coffee or tea, open your Bible to Colossians 2, and let these words from Paul settle gently over your heart. He is writing from a prison cell, not with scolding, but with the tender concern of a shepherd who loves his sheep. He sees the good order and the firmness of their faith, and his heart rises in joy. Then he leans in and says, in effect, “Stay right there. Don’t look elsewhere. Keep walking the way you first came to Him.”
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:6–7, ESV)
Beloved, do you hear the gentleness in that “therefore”? Paul is not issuing a new demand. He is pointing them back to something already true. You received Christ Jesus the Lord—not as a distant idea, not as one teacher among many, but as the living Lord who came to you in the gospel. That receiving was by grace, through faith, through the simple message you were taught. And now, my friend, the rest of the Christian life is not a different path. It is the same path, walked more deeply, more steadily, more trustingly.
Picture a young tree planted in rich soil. Its roots are already down. The storms may come, the seasons may change, but the tree does not have to dig itself up and replant itself every morning. It simply stays where it has been placed and draws life. That is what “rooted” means here. You have already been planted in Christ. Your life is hidden in Him. When fear rises or when someone offers you a “better” way, you do not have to scramble for a new foundation. You only have to remember where you already stand.
And while those roots hold you, the building continues. Day by day, almost quietly, the Lord is raising the structure of your life on that sure foundation. Sometimes you will notice the growth—patience where there used to be quick anger, hope where there used to be despair. Sometimes you will not notice it at all, and that is all right. The building is His work in you. You are not required to finish the house by your own strength. You are only invited to remain in the One who is both foundation and builder.
Paul adds that you are established in the faith just as you were taught. There is comfort in that phrase. The faith that saved you is the faith that keeps you. You do not need secret knowledge or a newer revelation. You need the same gospel you first believed—Christ crucified, risen, and reigning—held more firmly, loved more deeply, trusted more simply. The very teaching that brought you to Him is the teaching that will keep you safe when other voices grow loud.
And then the overflow: abounding in thanksgiving. Not a duty tacked on at the end, but the natural fragrance of a heart that knows it has received everything in Christ. When we remember that we did not earn our place in Him, gratitude rises. When we remember that nothing we add can make Him more sufficient, rest comes. Thanksgiving is not the reward for a perfect week; it is the atmosphere in which rooted, growing faith breathes.
My dear friend, if you are weary today, if you have been looking around wondering whether you have enough, or whether you are enough, hear Paul again: as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him. Stay rooted. Let Him keep building. Remain established in what you were taught. And let thanksgiving rise, not because everything is easy, but because He is enough.
Questions for Your Heart
- Where in your life right now do you most need to remember that you have already received Christ as Lord, rather than trying to earn or achieve something more?
- What “winds” (fears, pressures, alternative teachings, or simple weariness) have been tugging at your roots lately? How does knowing you are already planted in Him speak to those winds?
- In what ordinary, everyday places is the Lord currently building you up—even if the progress feels slow or invisible?
- Who first taught you the faith in a way that established you? Is there someone the Lord might be inviting you to encourage in the same gentle way?
- What one truth about Christ stirs even a small spark of thanksgiving in you today? How might you carry that spark with you through the hours ahead?
A Prayer
Father, thank You that we did not have to find our way to Christ; You brought Him to us in the gospel. Root us more deeply in Him today. Build us up where we feel weak. Establish our hearts in the simple, saving truth we were taught. And let thanksgiving rise in us—not as a performance, but as the quiet joy of people who know they are already held. We rest in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
May these words rest on you like a hand of blessing. Keep walking, dear one. You are already His.
