A Sheep Meanders Through Malachi 4:1-3

The Sun of Righteousness

Beloved friends,

Pull up a chair for a moment and settle in with this morning’s coffee or tea. The world can feel heavy, and sometimes it seems as if arrogance wins and faithfulness is forgotten. The last chapter of the Old Testament was spoken into just such a season. Let us ponder together Malachi 4:1–3 and hear the Lord’s heart.

For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.” (Malachi 4:1–3, ESV)

Malachi ministered about a century after the first exiles returned from Babylon. The temple had been rebuilt, yet the great promises of glory, peace, and God’s unmistakable presence still felt distant. Drought, disappointing harvests, corrupt priests, and weary hearts led many to mutter, “It is vain to serve God.” They wondered whether the Lord even noticed the difference between those who feared Him and those who did not.

Into that ache the Lord speaks of “the day.” Throughout the prophets this Day of the Lord is both terrifying and wonderful. Here it is pictured as a furnace. The arrogant and every evildoer become dry stubble. The fire will be so complete that neither root nor branch remains. There will be no hidden remnant of evil left to sprout again. God’s justice is not partial or forgetful. He sees. He will act. Then comes one of the most beautiful “buts” in Scripture.

But for you who fear my name…

The Lord distinguishes His own. Those who revere His name—the ones who, even in a cynical age, still spoke often of Him and whose names were written in His book of remembrance (Malachi 3:16)—are not stubble. For them the same day that consumes the wicked becomes sunrise.

“The sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.

From the earliest days of the church, Christians have heard these words and thought of Jesus. He is the true Light who comes into the world. He is righteousness itself—both the One who is perfectly righteous and the One who clothes us in His righteousness. The “wings” of the sun are its rays, stretching out to touch everything. Some have also noticed that the Hebrew word for “wings” can describe the edge or fringe of a garment. How precious, then, that people pressed through crowds simply to touch the fringe of Jesus’ cloak and found healing. The Sun of Righteousness has healing in His wings.

When that Sun rises over you, two things happen.

First, you go out leaping like calves released from the stall. Picture it: young cattle that have been confined suddenly burst into the open pasture, kicking up their heels, full of life and unrestrained joy. That is the freedom and vitality the Lord promises His people. Not grim endurance, but exuberant life.

Second, you will tread the wicked as ashes under your feet. This is not an invitation to personal vengeance. It is the promise of complete vindication. When the Lord acts, evil will have no remaining power. Those who belong to Christ will share in His victory. The things that now crush and mock and wound will one day be nothing more than dust beneath the feet of the redeemed.

Dear one, if you are in Christ, this word is for you. You already know the first rising of this Sun. Jesus has come. Light has dawned. Healing has begun—in forgiveness, in new birth, in the Spirit’s work within you. Yet we still wait for the full noonday of His return, when every shadow flees and every wound is finally and fully mended.

Until that day, the furnace of this present age still burns. Injustice still smolders. Arrogance still looks strong. But the Lord of hosts has spoken. The day is coming. For those who fear His name, it will not be a day of terror but of leaping joy and perfect healing. So lift your eyes. The Sun is already shining, and He is rising still.

Personal Reflection Questions

  1. Where in your life or in the world around you does it currently feel as if the arrogant prosper and God seems slow to act? How does this passage invite you to wait differently?
  2. What does it look like, in ordinary Tuesday-afternoon ways, for you to “fear the Lord’s name”? Where might reverence need to grow?
  3. In what specific place do you most need the healing rays of the Sun of Righteousness right now—body, memories, relationships, conscience, hope?
  4. When was the last time you tasted even a small measure of that “leaping like calves from the stall” joy? What might help you live more freely in the liberty Christ has already given?
  5. How does the certainty of final vindication free you from bitterness or the need to settle scores yourself?

My dear friends, may the Sun of Righteousness rise over you today with healing in His wings.

Your brother in Christ
