A Sheep’s Journey Through Psalms -108

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

There are mornings when the heart feels anything but steadfast—when the battles of the week have left us weary, when the news of the world presses in, or when our own sin and frailty whisper that God has somehow stepped back. Into that very place the Holy Spirit has given us Psalm 108, a warm and confident song of David that teaches us how to fix our gaze on the unchanging character of our covenant-keeping God. Written from a heart that had known both triumph and tears, this psalm is pure comfort: everything rests on the sovereign faithfulness of the Lord, not on our circumstances or our own strength.

Verses 1–5 – A Heart Fixed on the God Who Is Worthy

My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn!” (vv. 1–2). David does not wait until the battle is won or the feelings arrive. He chooses steadfastness because his heart is anchored in the God who never changes. Notice the progression: he speaks to his own soul, then to his instruments, then to the coming day itself. This is the discipline of praise that the Reformers loved—rising early to meet the Lord before the world’s noise drowns Him out. And what does he sing about? “For your steadfast love is great above the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds” (v. 4). The Hebrew word hesed—that rich, covenant love—rises higher than the sky. We rejoice that this love is not earned by us but freely given in Christ. It is the same love that moved the Father to send the Son, the same faithfulness that kept every promise made to David’s greater Son, our Lord Jesus. “Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!” (v. 5). David’s prayer is missionary and doxological at once. He longs for the nations to see the glory of the God of Israel. We who live on the other side of Pentecost know that this prayer is being answered through the gospel going to every tribe and tongue. Our singing is never small; it participates in the cosmic purpose of God to fill the earth with the knowledge of His glory.

Verse 6 – The Cry of the Beloved

That your beloved ones may be delivered, save with your right hand and answer me!” Here the tone turns tender. David does not say “my people” but “your beloved ones.” In the Hebrew it is the same word used of God’s love for His Son (see the voice at Jesus’ baptism). Because we are united to Christ by faith, we too are the beloved of the Father. The “right hand” that David calls upon is the very hand that now holds all authority in heaven and on earth—the hand that was nailed to the cross for us and is now raised in victory. When we feel pressed, this verse gives us permission to cry out, not as orphans begging for scraps, but as dearly loved children reminding our Father of His own promises.

Verses 7–9 – God’s Unbreakable Word

God has promised in his holiness…” What a glorious pivot! David does not lean on his feelings or his past victories; he leans on the holy, unbreakable speech of God. The Lord recounts His ownership of the land—Shechem and Succoth, Gilead and Manasseh, Ephraim and Judah—as symbols of His complete sovereignty. Then He speaks of the enemies: Moab becomes His washbasin, Edom the place where He throws His sandal in contempt, Philistia the object of His triumphant shout. We see here the doctrine of God’s decree. The land, the victories, the very borders of history—all of it was already settled in the mind of the sovereign Lord before David ever lifted a sword. And every promise made to Israel finds its resounding “Yes” in Jesus Christ (2 Cor 1:20). Our inheritance is not a patch of dirt in the Middle East but the new creation itself, secured by the blood of the greater David.

Verses 10–13 – Victory When God Seems Distant

Who will bring me to the fortified city? … Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go out, O God, with our armies.
David is honest. There are seasons when the armies of the Lord seem to stay in camp. The walls look too high, the enemy too strong, and the heart whispers, “Has God left us?” Yet even in that honest lament he refuses to turn to “the salvation of man” (v. 12). Human help is “vain”—empty, like a broken cistern. Then comes the triumphant confession that has comforted believers for centuries: “With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes” (v. 13). Notice the grammar. It is not “we shall try valiantly.” It is “we shall do valiantly” because He is the One who treads down the enemy. This is the perseverance of the saints in action: we keep marching not because we are strong, but because our God is.

Living This Psalm Today

Dear Christian, whatever fortified city stands before you this week—whether illness, financial pressure, relational pain, or the subtle accusations of the accuser—let Psalm 108 shape your response. Let your heart be steadfast because it is held by a steadfast Savior. Sing before the dawn, because the dawn of resurrection has already broken over the grave. Claim the promises spoken in God’s holiness, for every one of them is “Yes” and “Amen” in Jesus. And when you feel rejected or abandoned, remember that the same right hand that once hung limp on the cross now rules the universe for the sake of His beloved ones.

May the Lord make our hearts like David’s: quick to praise, honest in lament, and unshakably confident in the God who never breaks His word. With God we shall do valiantly—today, tomorrow, and forever.In the strong name of our triumphant King,

A Banner of Hope in the Storm: Reflections on Psalm 60

My dear friend, imagine for a moment the dust-choked battlefield, where the ground itself seems to quake under the weight of defeat. Swords clash like thunder, banners lie tattered in the mud, and the once-mighty warriors scatter like leaves in a fierce gale. This is the vivid scene that unfolds in Psalm 60, a heartfelt cry from King David amid the turmoil of war and national crisis. Written during his campaigns against Aram and Edom, as recorded in the psalm’s title, it’s a raw, honest plea that resonates deeply with our own seasons of struggle. Yet, woven through the despair is a thread of unshakeable hope—a reminder that even when God seems distant, His banner waves high, calling us back to victory. As we walk through this psalm together, let’s uncover its treasures, drawing comfort from its truths and applying them to our lives with a warm embrace of faith.

The psalm opens with a lament that paints a picture of divine abandonment, like a loving father turning away in disappointment, leaving his children to face the storm alone. “O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses; you have been angry; oh, restore us,” David cries in verses 1-3. Here, the earth trembles as if split by an invisible hand, breaches gaping like wounds in a shattered wall, and the people are forced to drink “the wine of astonishment“—a bitter, swirling draught that leaves them reeling, dizzy with hardship and confusion. It’s as if the very foundations of life are shaking, isn’t it? We’ve all tasted that wine at times: the job loss that hits like an earthquake, the relationship fractured beyond recognition, or the health crisis that scatters our plans like defeated troops. David doesn’t sugarcoat it; he acknowledges that these “hard things” come from God’s sovereign hand, not as random chaos, but as a call to humility and repentance.

Yet, even in this vulnerability, David points us to the source of healing. As church leader Matthew Henry insightfully observes, “In God’s displeasure their troubles began, therefore in his favour their prosperity must begin.” What a comforting truth! When we feel cast off, it’s not the end—it’s an invitation to turn back to Him. God isn’t a distant tyrant but a compassionate restorer, mending the breaches with His gentle touch, steadying the ground beneath our feet.

Then, the tone shifts like dawn breaking over a war-torn valley, illuminating a symbol of hope in verse 4: “You have set up a banner for those who fear you, that it may be displayed because of the truth.” Picture that banner now—vibrant crimson fluttering against a stormy sky, a rallying point for the weary soldiers, emblazoned with the promise of God’s unchanging truth. It’s not just a flag; it’s a beacon, a declaration that amid the chaos, God gathers His people under His protection. For us as Christians, this banner foreshadows Christ Himself, the ultimate standard lifted high on the cross, drawing all who fear God to safety and triumph. No wonder Charles Spurgeon, in his reflections on this psalm, declares, “The bravest men are usually intrusted with the banner, and it is certain that those who fear God must have less fear of man than any others.” Friend, in your battles—whether against doubt, temptation, or external foes—lift your eyes to that banner. It’s there for you, waving defiantly because of God’s faithful word.

In verses 5-8, David pivots to rejoicing in God’s promises, claiming victory over enemies as assured possessions. “God has spoken in his holiness: I will exult,” he proclaims, dividing lands like Shechem and Succoth as if the conquest is already done. Gilead and Manasseh are His, Ephraim the helmet of strength, Judah the lawgiver. Even foes like Moab become mere washpots—humble vessels for cleansing—and Edom a place to casually cast a shoe, symbolizing effortless dominion. Philistia is taunted to “shout in triumph” over David’s success. What vivid confidence! It’s like a king surveying his map, marking territories with bold strokes, knowing the Divine Conqueror fights for him. Spurgeon captures this spirit beautifully: “Faith regards the promise not as fiction but fact, and therefore drinks in joy from it, and grasps victory by it. ‘God hath spoken; I will rejoice:’ here is a fit motto for every soldier of the cross.” As believers, we too can claim this: in Christ, our enemies—sin, death, and the powers of darkness—are already defeated. We divide the spoils of grace, wearing the helmet of salvation and wielding the law of love.

But David doesn’t end in presumption; verses 9-12 bring a humble plea for God’s ongoing help. “Who will bring me into the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?” he asks, acknowledging that past rejections don’t erase future reliance. Even after tasting defeat when God “did not go out with our armies,” he affirms, “Give us help from trouble, for vain is the help of man.” It’s a stark reminder: our strategies, alliances, and strengths are like fragile reeds in the wind without Him. Yet, the psalm closes on a triumphant note: “Through God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes.” Imagine stamping grapes in a winepress—that’s how God crushes opposition, empowering us to march forward with courageous steps.

Oh, how this psalm speaks to our hearts today! In a world trembling with uncertainty—pandemics, divisions, personal trials—Psalm 60 invites us to own our brokenness, rally under Christ’s banner, and trust in God’s promises for victory. As Henry reminds us, “Hope in God is the best principle of true courage, for what need those fear who have God on their side?” So, my friend, whatever breach shakes your life, turn to Him. Let His restoration flow like healing rain over parched earth.

Let me close with a simple prayer: Heavenly Father, in our moments of astonishment and defeat, restore us again. Raise Your banner over us, that we may rejoice in Your holiness and do valiantly through Your strength. Amen.

In Spirit and In Truth – Excerpt from A Heart Hungry to Worship

Worship is not about us and how we feel; it is about giving God the honor due His name. His Word, not our feelings, define that “honor”, which is due Him.[1]

In Spirit and in Truth

            At the end of the second chapter, a question was raised: “What does it mean to worship God in spirit and in truth?” Subsequent chapters have helped to lay the foundation for the answer to that question, which we will now consider. We will look at each of the terms Jesus used: worship, spirit, and truth, in order.

Worship

The word Jesus uses  for worship in John 4:24 is proskuneo in Greek (or shachah in Hebrew). It means to “bow down” or “prostrate” oneself. The connotation is to engage in an act of humility, submission and reverence toward God.

In His conversation with the Samaritan woman, Jesus pointed out to her that the Samaritan’s idea of worshipping God was wrong. “You worship what you do not know, we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.”[2] The Samaritans worshipped God through ritual. For them, God was not personal. He was viewed as the Creator but not as their Father. Jesus was very deliberate in addressing God as Father (3 times in a row) emphasizing the personal nature of the relationship. He was trying to show her what was missing in her worship – a personal touch.

The only way true worship of God can take place is for a person to enter into a personal relationship with Him. God has to become their Father and they His children. The Samaritans knew God’s name, but not His character, personality or purposes. This is true of many people today. They know of God, but they do not know God personally for they have never experienced His salvation.

Unless a person accepts God’s salvation, he or she cannot enter into a filial (family) relationship with Him. Without this personal relationship, one cannot worship Him correctly. “In other words, one can know and worship God by experiencing His salvation which is in Jesus and which enables the worshipper to call God “abba”, Father.”[3]

This is one reason why Jesus Christ came to Earth. He came to personalize God and to model the type of relationship with Him that God desires.

In Spirit

Christ, in the statement He made to the Samaritan woman, makes worship a matter of the heart, not ritual or tradition. Worship has sincerity at its core. It is the response of one’s spirit to the Spirit of God, a communing of one to the other. While worship can be planned, most often it is spontaneous, a response to proximity with God.

The New Testament uses different phrases to illustrate what it means when a person submits their life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Phrases such as “born again”, “born from above,” or “becoming a new creation” serve to convey the idea of what it means to become a child of God. The language of adoption is also used, with God the Father shown as adopting sons and daughters into His Kingdom, out of the kingdom of this world.

Those who have experienced this adoption, this being “born again”, are the only ones who can worship God in spirit because the spirit now in them is the Spirit of God. You see, at the moment of salvation a wonderful event occurs. God recreates us spiritually (we are born anew) which allows us to interact with Him intimately. This is what Jesus was telling the Samaritan woman. She did not need to worry about where to worship. She needed to understand how to be able to worship. She needed to experience a rebirth, spiritually. Jesus had a very similar conversation with a man called Nicodemus in John, chapter 3.

Intellectual, erudite, skilled in rhetoric and theology, Nicodemus came to Jesus seeking answers. Nicodemus was “the” teacher of Israel, their premier religious instructor. He had heard Jesus speak, he had seen the miracles Jesus had performed, and he accepted the truth that Jesus was a man sent by God, yet he was not a Christian. He did not accept that Jesus was more than a man sent from God, that Jesus was God in the flesh.

When Nicodemus approached Jesus, he gave him a very sincere compliment. He was met by a very confrontational reply, “Unless you are born again, you will not see the kingdom of God.”  Jesus tells the premier religious teacher in Israel that he is not going to be in God’s Kingdom unless he experiences a spiritual rebirth. The word Jesus uses for rebirth means a transformation so complete that it will allow a person to enter another world and adapt to its conditions. He is telling Nicodemus that he needs to undergo a complete metamorphosis in order to enter the Kingdom of God. He is saying to Nicodemus, “Unless you allow me to spiritually transform you, you will not be able to survive in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus is insisting that Nicodemus undergoes a spiritual change from who he is currently, to what he needs to be. To Nicodemus, this statement is staggering. He understands what Jesus is implying, that his religion was futile. Nicodemus was a Pharisee. Pharisees tended to be hyper-legalists who externalized religion. They pursued a form of godliness that had no basis in reality. They were fanatically religious, striving to obey over 600 laws. For a Pharisee, salvation was obtained by works, doing things that they believed were pleasing to God. Being born again is something Nicodemus cannot do. Being born is something that happens to you, not something you do for yourself.

Nicodemus and Jesus did have something in common. Both were Jewish teachers. Jewish teachers taught spiritual truths in symbols. Nicodemus understands Jesus’ symbolism and answers back in kind. “How can a man, whose habits and ways of thinking have been fixed for so long, really be expected to change radically? Physical rebirth is impossible so is spiritual rebirth any more feasible? I can’t start over again. It’s too late. I’ve gone too far in my religious system to change now. I’d have to start all over again. My case is hopeless.”

Many people feel that way. Unlike Dinah, from chapter 3, they are too steeped in their religious tradition to be willing to change. They feel trapped and hopeless by beliefs that they have held all their lives and yet they are unwilling to change. It is not that they cannot change; it is that they will not change unless they allow God’s Spirit to convert them.

In order to satisfy the hunger of their hearts, in order to worship God correctly, they must allow God to transform their life spiritually. The new birth must come from the Holy Spirit of God. A person needs to be spiritually purified and spiritually reborn, and only the Spirit of God can only accomplish this.

We aren’t told how Nicodemus reacts to what he is told. He understands that Jesus is telling him that the new birth must be experienced in order to be understood. None of his scholarly wisdom will explain it. Only by immersing himself in Jesus will he be able to understand salvation.

Nicodemus knew about Jesus, had listened to Jesus, admired Jesus and complimented Jesus, but he did not know Jesus. He needed Jesus to transform his life through being born again.

Those whose hearts hunger to worship God must allow God to transform their life first. Then, they will be able to worship Him spirit to spirit. They will be able to hear Him and understand Him when He speaks. They will experience closeness, a sense of belonging, a kindred-ness with God that surpasses anything they could have imagined.  This is what Jesus means when He tells us we have to worship in spirit.

In Truth

The second criteria Jesus says is necessary to be able to worship God is found in the phrase, “and in truth.” Knowing whom to worship, Jesus, is of supreme importance. To worship in ignorance makes a sham of religion.

Truth, in biblical terms, is whatever is in harmony with the nature and will of God. The essence of true worship must be on God’s terms and He has revealed that the only worship He will accept is that which is based through Jesus Christ. The revelation of God in Christ is absolute truth.

The issue is not where a person worships, but how they worship and whom they worship. The how is in spirit. The who is Jesus. Worship is more than just emotion. Too many people confuse the terms praise and worship. Praise is rooted in emotion. Worship is grounded in knowledge – the knowledge of God’s Word and the knowledge of God’s Son.

By gaining a proper understanding of what Jesus said to the woman at the well, a person can come to worship God properly. A person can no longer sustain the argument that the format or form of worship does not matter. Jesus clearly states that it does. It must come from the spirit and it has to be rooted in God’s revealed truth. Not truth as a person feels it should be (subjective), but as it actually is, measured by divine revelation via the Bible (objective). When knowledge of God is deficient, worship of Him will also be deficient.

Since God has decreed that He will only accept worship that is grounded in and which flows through Jesus, this makes Christianity the only religion accepted by God. No other form of worship is accepted. A person cannot decide to worship God in whatever way he or she wants to. They did not make the standard. No religion can develop rules that make worship to God possible, because worship is rooted in and through the person of Jesus. Truth cannot be found in the Koran, Baghivad Gita, Pearl of Great Price or other religious works, because they do not contain the historical record of Jesus Christ and the truth of His life. Truth is not perception. Truth is an absolute.

To worship God in spirit and in truth requires a person to come to God on His terms, surrendering their life to His Son Jesus, accepting His forgiveness and cleansing from sin. At that moment, the heart is renewed, God’s Spirit comes in, and fellowship begins with God that will last for an eternity.

It is a wonderful thing to experience the transforming person of Jesus Christ. Just ask the Samaritan woman and her neighbors.
